Pharmacy Tech to Seamstress

Pharmacy Tech to Seamstress

I often get asked about the origins of this business. So what made me decide to start a sewing business?

Like many teens in the 90's, my first job was at a grocery store as a bagger, then cashier. One day, the pharmacy was short staffed. They asked me to go and work the pharmacy cash register. Let me tell you, I thought I was the bees knees working in that pharmacy. 😎 I went home full of air and determined to become a pharmacy technician.

Ten years later I'd long since reached my goal and was becoming jaded about my future.  Pharmacy technicians do make good money, but there isn't any room for advancement.  Usually the only way to get a raise is to switch companies, which I'd done several times already.  It was a stressful job and my health was suffering.

I'd always wanted to be a pharmacy tech, but I'd wanted even more to be a stay at home mom.  So after meeting my husband in 2011 we started thinking of ways I could make money and stay at home.  We ended up starting a sort of reselling business on eBay and in 2015 I left the healthcare world.

When I became pregnant in 2016, my passion for sewing came back.  I've always dabbled with sewing, but throughout my pregnancy I was sewing every day.  My skills prospered and our wardrobes became handmade clothing. Even after our daughter was born, the sewing continued.  I'd cut fabric while she was with her father or on my back, and hand sew while she slept next to me.

A local organization got wind of the nursing clothing I'd been making myself. They offered a booth at a breastfeeding event they were hosting in a few months.  By now my eBay business was unsuccessful as I'd been putting more time into sewing and learning to be a mother.  The possibility of work I enjoyed renewed my entrepreneurial passion.

I researched every facet of owning a sewing business and managed to launch it in time for the show.  The first year was a whirlwind of trying new styles and learning what new Moms wanted.

Every quarter my skills would grow, both in sewing and in business ownership. I'd look back on my earlier posts and cringe.  A website was created, then another.  I debated on going back to Etsy a few times.  I tried starting a few Facebook Groups and decided they weren't my thing.  I upgraded my machinery and rearranged my sewing studio.  I narrowed down offerings again and again.  I listened to mothers who couldn't find a nursing bra that fit. Six months later we launched the Busty Mama Nursing Bra

Somehow, Yawning Mama turned into more than a sewing business.  Our followers shaped it into a brand passionate about helping new mothers have the courage to breastfeed anywhere, anytime.

As Yawning Mama embarks on yet more change and growth, I'm proud to be at the helm of such an inspiring brand.  I can't wait to look back on today's work and see how much has changed.
